The Cause of Your Pain Isn't What You Think it Is

What REALLY needs fixing for your pain relief?

Pain has many different causes.

When it's the everyday variety of pain (not associated with a primary disease or fracture), we like to think it's something simple like lifting "wrong" or sleeping "wrong" or sitting "too much" but none of those things matter if your body chemistry and stress coping don't have your equal attention. If all you’re looking at for solutions is posture or movement, you’re only looking at one third of the answer and you’ll never get lasting relief without the other two thirds.

I get it. Anything with the word “chemistry” in it sounds overwhelming and the concept of stress is equally obscure. Both things seem so intangible. At least with posture and movement you’ve got something visible to play with. But research is showing us that the idea of “perfect” posture or “correct” movement is less meaningful when it comes to pain than has been previously thought. Inflammation is at the root of all pain and disease. What governs inflammation in the body? Your body chemistry. What else influences inflammation? Stress chemistry. Yes, when you experience stress your brain and body chemistry change in response and some of that results in an increase in cellular inflammation.

The repair guides and action plans in the Everyday Pain Guide give you the information you need in manageable bite sized portions to manage your inflammation and return to pain-free function. You'll be walked through sensible easy-to-implement actions from the first sign of pain. When pain first strikes and makes you feel like you can’t do anything at all – that’s when the tools in The Everyday Pain Guide show up for you. The activities and strategies are organized in order of stages of healing so that you can quiet the pain right away with ease. The goal is to support your progress and get immediate relief while you prepare to get more help if needed.

What we do in those early moments really matters.

Sometimes that’s about what you can do with your body positioning. Sometimes it’s about what you can do to control the inflammation from the inside. But it’s always about managing your stress from the pain. No matter how experience you are with your body, you might even be a healthcare provider yourself but when pain strikes from out of the blue it naturally causes a cascade of worry about how to show up for ourselves and others, cancelled plans, aging and disability.  None of us want to be or appear less capable.  When you take action right away and see that you do have control and not all is lost, then your stress will plummet and your recovery will be that much easier.
